DENTAL IMPLANTS- A NEW BEGINNING

God planned to give us teeth two times in our lifetime. But we know, many a times we also prayed if we had the third set of teeth too! Why? Because we all love that is natural, fixed and efficient. Natural teeth function all together for proper chewing, speech as well as good looks. Natural teeth are strong enough to provide sufficient chewing force to cut and grind through hard substances, which later on help in proper digestion. They also give the face its proper shape, so when the natural teeth are lost, face looks more old. Teeth also support the musculature of face and ultimately give us a beautiful look. But sadly, they are given to us only twice in lifetime. So when they’re gone due to any reason, we really wish that we get a replacement as good as natural! Well, not to worry, we the Dentists can now mark the new beginning of the third dentition. Yes, it is possible to have those natural-feeling, fixed and efficient teeth all over again after the two sets you already had.

Dental Implants is now just a revolution, an era in Dentistry, which is a breakthrough for all those young, middle aged and elderly who somehow lost their permanents due to cavities, pyorrhea or any accidental loss. So what are Implants? Many of us do not know, or just know them as some screw fitted into our jaw bone. But it is not just that. So here we take a chance to introduce our dear patients majorly about the miraculous “Third set of Teeth”.

There was a time when the teeth are gone, then you must wear a denture. It just used to dance in the mouth while eating, bounce out while coughing or sneezing, very uncomfortable while speaking and also in the matters of hygiene; many a times creating an embarrassing situation. Then there was a time when few of the missing teeth were replaced by a ‘bridge’, which just as a road-side bridge, had two pillars for support from the adjacent teeth and the missing tooth just hanged between the two pillars. The bridge stayed, only till the pillars stayed! In a way, bridges only reduced the life-span of the supporting teeth, by giving them a greater load than usual and also hampering their overall health. A bridge only transfers the chewing load of the food to the supporting innocent bystanders, which ultimately break due to overload. This only increases the span of the bridge, ultimately killing more of the supporting teeth.

So why not we only replace those teeth which just fell off? Dental Implants not only spare the remaining natural teeth, but also replace the lost tooth in the most natural way.

An Implant, or a dental implant is a surgical component of Titanium (a nobel, biocompatible metal) which interfaces with the bone of the jaw to support any dental prosthesis. It is structured in the shape of a small cylinder with spiral indentations and the surfaces are differently textured and treated according to the various companies. This cylinder is surgically placed into the jaw bone by the dental surgeon after a complete radiographic as well as clinical study. Once into the bone, the dental implant is then gripped by the bone naturally, by forming new bone into the spiral indentations and integrating the implant into itself. This process is called Osseointegration, wherein the implant and the jaw bone become one part. This process usually take around 2.5 to 3 months on an average, depending on person to person and the type of implant used. Once the implant is ‘fused’ with the bone, it can be loaded, which means it can be used for chewing function by giving a crown over it. In this way a whole new tooth is born again which is closest to natural!

Dental Implant not only restores the lost chewing function, but also gives improved looks, restore the speech and gives back a whole new confidence, especially when it involves the lovely looking front teeth. Dental Implant will never catch a cavity, nor will it rust. With an implant it is possible to chew hard food as good as a natural tooth. There is no embarrassing slippage out of the mouth and it exactly matches your natural tooth. A good oral care with a half-yearly dental check-up will keep these with you for a great long time.
